Sony: Lair’s PS3-PSP connectivity is just the beginning

September 8th, 2007

Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) and Factor 5’s Lair is unique in its innovative use of the PSP in playing the game. The way it works is by outputting the in-game image to the PSP. When you’re pressing buttons, these commands are sent to the PS3 with a low enough latency (the time between inputting a command and its execution) to avoid any visible lag. A Sony technical insider told Pocket Gamer that “It’s a nice start. Over time, I’m sure we’ll have more advanced features.” This is pretty exciting considering that it is technically possible to implement what the developers of the game have done to pretty much any game released, or slated to be released for the console. We say technically because the developers already have all the tools they need in the Sony PS3 software development kit. Whether or not it is a good idea to do is another story. Jon Jordan, who wrote the article on Pocket Gamer, pointed out that the average home network latency is fine for a 30 FPS game. However, it will undoubtedly struggle when it has to handle games with faster frame rates, such as fighting games. Expect the PS3 to PSP connectivity in games to be explored further in future games. Judging from the initial attempt at implementing it, this technology would appear to be perfect for turn-based RPGs and puzzle games.

Clive Barker’s Jericho (PS3, Xbox 360): Special Edition pack shots

September 8th, 2007

Getting yourself locked and loaded for the trip to Al Khalid in Mercury Steam’s Clive Barker’s Jericho for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3? We’ll be updating today with the pack shots for the game’s PS3 and Xbox 360 ports. More specifically, box art for Jericho’s Special Edition packs. As advertised by the box (fronted by the crazy crusader dude from the trailers), the Special Edition box carries an art book that will contain plenty of illustrations of the the game’s demented residents. Given just how spooky the screenshots already were, we’re a little anxious as to what the art book may contain.PC owners may want to wait a little longer, as only the PS3 and 360 version are available for viewing at the moment. Check back in case we pick up more Jericho-related updates in the near future.Buy: [Clive Barker’s Jericho (PS3)]Buy: [Clive Barker’s Jericho (Xbox 360)]

Among those listed in the release schedule was PlayStation Home, which was reportedly launching in Europe on October 11.While this release list has made many a PlayStation fan happy, Sony has announced that it did not, in fact, issue the release schedule. An SCEE spokesman told GamesIndustry.biz: “That’s not an official release schedule. None of the dates on the list have been confirmed at this time.”According to the SCEE spokesman, the only PS3 release dates confirmed so far are the ones for Heavenly Sword and Warhawk. No comment on the PSP release dates was given. The spokesman also declined to comment further when asked specifically about Home’s rumored launch date but did reveal that Sony will be “making more announcements about Home at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.”Stay tuned for more updates.
